Product Based Planning is a technique used in PRINCE2. It focuses on what is to be produced rather than how to produce it.

Contents

Purpose

  • To grasp the detailed nature, purpose and function of the product.
  • To understand the derivation of the product.
  • To describe the appearance of the product.
  • To state the level of quality.
  • To state what must happen and how quality will be measured.
  • To state what resources in terms of skills and capabilities will be required.

Description

The Product Based Planning Technique teaches you to think of what will be produced in your project rather than how it will be produced. A Product is, for example, a PID. "Creating a PID" is not a Product. Using Product Based Planning will result in a logical sequence for the work.

Product Based Planning is considered extremely important in PRINCE2, it is the only Technique that is mandatory to use in a PRINCE2 project.

Usage

There are 4 main steps in Product Based Planning:

  1. Product Description: Description of the final product of the project.
  2. Product Breakdown Structure: Hierarchical breakdown of the main product into sub-products.
  3. Sub-Product Descriptions for each of the sub-products.
  4. Product Flow Diagram: Flow diagram of the PBS showing the dependencies of the sub-products in chronological order.
