Starting up a Project (SU)
Purpose & Description
- The first process in PRINCE2.
- The process is triggered by a Project Mandate. The Project Mandate may have various formats, from a chat over lunch to a Project Brief.
- The Project officially begins once the SU process has been completed and the Project Board approves the official start.
- The Project Mandate should at a minimum explain a reason for the project and a simple expected outcome.
- The SU process should be kept as short as possible as the Project has not officially started.
Objectives
- Ensures a controlled start to the project.
- Ensures roles, responsibilities and authorities exist
- To plan for the Initiation of the project.
Inputs
- Project Mandate
Outputs
- Agreed job descriptions for Project Executive and Project Manager
- Draft of other job descriptions
- Daily Log
- Project Approach
- Project Brief
- Project Manager Team Structure
- Project Mandate
- Risk Log
Hints and Tips
- For smaller projects, identify at a bare minimum the Project Executive and the Project Manager.
- Try to read over Lessons Learned Reports from similar projects.
- A feasibility study may be required to provide enough information for a Project Mandate.
- Learn to spend as little time as possible during this process yet at the same time collect valuable information. A “small” project should not spend more than an hour on this process.
