Starting up a Project (SU)

Purpose & Description

  • The first process in PRINCE2.
  • The process is triggered by a Project Mandate. The Project Mandate may have various formats, from a chat over lunch to a Project Brief.
  • The Project officially begins once the SU process has been completed and the Project Board approves the official start.
  • The Project Mandate should at a minimum explain a reason for the project and a simple expected outcome.
  • The SU process should be kept as short as possible as the Project has not officially started.

Objectives

  • Ensures a controlled start to the project.
  • Ensures roles, responsibilities and authorities exist
  • To plan for the Initiation of the project.

Inputs

  • Project Mandate

Hints and Tips

  • For smaller projects, identify at a bare minimum the Project Executive and the Project Manager.
  • Try to read over Lessons Learned Reports from similar projects.
  • A feasibility study may be required to provide enough information for a Project Mandate.
  • Learn to spend as little time as possible during this process yet at the same time collect valuable information. A “small” project should not spend more than an hour on this process.
