Directing a Project (DP)
Purpose & Description
- This process approves the initiation of a Project in PRINCE2.
- This process can be triggered by all other processes in PRINCE2.
- This process is a level above the Project Manager. The Project officially begins once the SU process has been completed and the Project Board approves the official start. The Project Board use the DP process.
- The Project Board should set up communication with Corporate or Programme Management.
- All Project Decisions outside what has been approved to the Project Manager happens in the DP process.
Objectives
- Ensures the ultimate success of the Project.
- To commit the required resources while the Project is viable to the Business Case.
- To make decisions for the Project Manager.
- To provide ad-hoc guidance to the Project Manager.
Inputs
- Starting up a Project (Initial Stage Plan & Project Brief)
- Managing Stage Boundaries. Deciding whether to proceed.
- Ad-Hoc direction and providing guidance as necessary.
- Project Closure. The Project Manager requests closure from DP process.
Outputs
- Authorisation to proceed (To Project Manager)
- Authorisation of exception plan or next stage plan (To Project Manager)
- Authorisation to close the Project.
- Approval reports and approved plans (To Programme Management)
Hints and Tips
- The Project Board must aim to maintain a healthy balance between managing by exception and interrupting the Project Manager in the day to day work.
